Tarawih is a recommended night prayer performed during the month of Ramadan. The first Tarawih is observed on the night of the first day of Ramadan, while the last Tarawih is performed on the evening before the 1st of Shawwal.
If Ramadan spans 29 days, the final Tarawih is held on the 29th night. However, if Ramadan completes 30 days, the final Tarawih is observed on the 30th night, before the night of Eid al-Fitr.
The determination of the last Tarawih night, based on the sighting of the new moon (rukyat hilal) to establish the beginning of the new Hijri month, particularly in accordance with the Indonesian government’s decision, requires waiting for the official confirmation during the “isbat” session.
This means that the decision regarding the performance of Tarawih on the last night of Ramadan is contingent upon the announcement of the sighting of the new moon to confirm the start of Shawwal.
If the “isbat” (confirmation) declares that Eid al-Fitr (1st of Shawwal, 1446 AH) falls on March 30, 2025, then the final Tarawih was held on the 29th night (Friday, March 28, 2025 - Saturday, March 29, 2025), and there will be no Tarawih on the current night.
However, if it is announced that Ramadan completes 30 days and Eid al-Fitr is on March 31, 2025, then the final Tarawih will take place on the 30th night, which is the current night (Saturday, March 29, 2025).
The Indonesian government follows the moon sighting method for determining Islamic months. On the other hand, the central leadership of Muhammadiyah, based on calculations (hisab), has already set the date of Eid al-Fitr as March 31, 2025. Therefore, according to Muhammadiyah, the final Tarawih is also tonight, Saturday, March 29, 2025.
In conclusion, whether Tarawih is conducted on the current night depends on the government’s decision regarding the date of Eid al-Fitr, either on March 30 or March 31, 2025.
